Beef and buffalo meat production in Burkina Faso surged from 90 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 131 thousand tonnes in 2019, a 45.6% increase. This growth was supported by the Program to Support Agricultural Development in Burkina Faso (PADAB II), which prioritized improving livestock production and marketing through local stakeholder involvement and sectoral action plans.

Production dipped to 123.4 thousand tonnes in 2020 due to rising costs in cattle rearing and high animal maintenance expenses, which constrained output. A slight recovery to 126.2 thousand tonnes followed in 2021 as the sector adapted to ongoing challenges, including continued price pressures and preferences for cross-border cattle purchases.

The market entered a phase of steady expansion, reaching 132.2 thousand tonnes by 2023. This was bolstered by the launch of the Faso Abattoir Agency in 2022, which aimed to boost meat exports and add value to the livestock sector, alongside sustained high beef prices that incentivized production despite persistent cost hurdles.
