Pineapple juice market in Western Africa

From 2018 to 2020, the West African pineapple juice market expanded significantly, with volume rising from 17.3 million liters to 26.5 million liters. This growth coincided with the entry of new players such as the Togolese company Jus Délice, which secured €2.6 million in funding to produce premium pineapple juice for export to Europe. At the same time, the presence of over 100 small processing units in Benin, though constrained in export capacity by specific regulatory requirements like certificates of origin and ECOWAS approval, supported domestic market activity.

After peaking in 2020, market volume contracted to 11.0 million liters by 2023. The decline was driven by rising production costs, as the weakening euro against the dollar increased the price of imported raw materials by about 20%. Concurrent inflation and higher consumer prices for juices in key export destinations like France slowed demand and shifted preferences toward homemade juices.

By 2024, cost pressures persisted while European regulatory changes began to shape production. The EU Sugar Reduction Directive 2024/1438 prompted technological innovations such as fermentation to lower sugar content, and packaging regulations like PPWR pushed for material shifts. These developments, along with the growth of quality snacking in foodservice, opened new segments for reduced-sugar and fermented juice products.

From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 33.1%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.0%. The lowest volume was in 2018 at 4 515 K l, which saw a decline of 21.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the Netherlands, France, and Belgium were the three main markets for pineapple juice exports from Western Africa, collectively accounting for 19.9% of total exports in volume.

Western Africa's pineapple juice exports increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 7 179 K $ US, up by 33.1% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports rose by 19.2%, with a CAGR of 6.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 4 713 K $ US, when exports fell by 21.8%.
