Earlier Report Observations

Pig offal production in Burkina Faso increased from 21 457 t in 2018 to 21 865 t in 2019, driven by the sector's profitability and consistent demand that outpaced supply, particularly in major urban centers like Ouagadougou.

Output fell sharply to 14 334 t in 2020 and further to 11 999 t in 2021. The continued decline in 2021 aligned with a roughly 50% rise in pork import and export prices since 2016, which increased local production costs, while a high level of clandestine slaughtering affected official production figures.

Production recovered to 12 290 t in 2022 and reached 12 587 t in 2023. This growth was supported by the inauguration of a new slaughterhouse in Ouahigouya, which expanded processing capacity, and by strengthened official controls and traceability measures that improved sector efficiency and safety.
