The poultry meat market in Burkina Faso has long faced logistical constraints, particularly a lack of reliable cold storage and refrigerated transport outside major cities, which limited the frozen product segment. Despite these challenges, production grew to 408 thousand tons in 2019. This trend reversed sharply in 2020 when output fell to 294.7 thousand tons, largely because soaring feed prices, which represent 60-70% of production costs, significantly reduced farmer profitability.

A gradual recovery began in 2021, with production reaching 298.2 thousand tons. The market received a notable boost in August 2022 with the introduction of the 'poulet bicyclette' label, a regulatory measure designed to protect and standardize local poultry, which helped push production to 301.8 thousand tons that year. Growth continued into 2023, with output climbing to 305.4 thousand tons, even though persistent infrastructure gaps, such as unreliable electricity and a shortage of refrigerated trucks, continued to hamper distribution beyond urban centers.

Poultry meat and offal production in Burkina Faso declined after two years of growth. In 2020, the country produced 294.7 thousand tonnes, which represents a 27.8% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 21.6%, averaging an annual decline of 7.8%. The peak was reached in 2019 with 408.0 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 6.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 30.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 9.4%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 69.4 tonnes, which also marked the largest annual decline of 20.2%. In contrast, 2019 saw the biggest annual increase of 50.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main suppliers of poultry meat and offal to Burkina Faso were Benin (30.3% of imports in kind), the Netherlands (29.8%), and France (17.2%). Together, these three countries accounted for 77.4% of total imports in kind.

After two years of growth, the value of poultry meat and offal imports into Burkina Faso dropped. In 2020, imports totaled 87.4 thousand US dollars, a 38.5% decrease from 2019. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 142.2 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest annual increase of 32.2% in 2018.
