This growth coincided with the establishment of Charcuterie Moderne du Burkina, an integrated modern slaughtering and meat processing unit that aimed to ensure a healthy and secure supply of pork products, likely supporting higher output.

Output then fell sharply to 21 654 tons in 2020 and further to 18 127 tons in 2021. The livestock sector's focus on exporting live animals—where Burkina Faso ranked as the 104th global exporter—may have reduced domestic processing activity, contributing to the decline in pig fat production.

A modest recovery followed, with output reaching 18 565 tons in 2022 and 19 015 tons in 2023. Government-led efforts, including a presidential initiative for agricultural production and the launch of AGRA's five-year strategic plan to boost productivity, provided renewed support for the livestock and meat processing sectors.
