The market for fresh or chilled peas in the MENA region showed considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 529.7 thousand tonnes, consumption grew steadily to peak at 559.2 thousand tonnes in 2020 before a minor contraction the following year.

A sharp decline to 481.8 thousand tonnes marked 2022, driven primarily by a significant reduction in domestic production. The market rebounded strongly in 2023, reaching 585.5 thousand tonnes as production volumes recovered sharply to their highest level in the period.

In 2020, MENA produced 560.1 thousand tonnes of peas, showing little change from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 8.3%, averaging 2.7% per year. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 581.0 thousand tonnes, which represented a 12.3% increase. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 3.7%.

Exports peas from MENA

Exports in kind, t

Peas exports from MENA showed notable fluctuations during the period. Volumes reached their peak in 2018 at 58 254 tonnes and fell to their lowest point in 2020 at 4 172 tonnes, marking a 14-fold difference. In 2020, exports declined by 14.1% year-on-year. The largest increase was recorded in 2018 at 970.3%, while the biggest drop occurred in 2019 with a 91.7% decrease.

From 2017 to 2020, peas exports from MENA were relatively evenly distributed among destinations. The United Kingdom accounted for 8.6% of exports in kind, the Netherlands for 8.2%, and Belgium for 7.6%, together making up 24.5% of total flows.

Cross-border shipments of peas from MENA increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 11 157 thousand US dollars, a modest rise of 8.2% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 5.4%, averaging 1.8% annually. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 8 845 thousand US dollars, which represented a 16.4% decline. The largest increase occurred in 2019 with a 16.6% growth.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands was the top buyer of peas from MENA in value terms, accounting for 19.9% of exports, followed by the United Kingdom at 17.6% and Belgium at 14.0%. Together, these three countries represented 51.5% of total export value.

Peas imports into MENA declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 3 265 tonnes, a 16.9% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 37.6%, with an average annual decline of 14.6%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 6 905 tonnes, which marked a 31.9% increase. The largest drop occurred in 2019 with a 43.1% decrease.

Between 2017 and 2020, the country structure of peas imports into MENA was highly diversified. Pakistan accounted for 22.4% of imports in kind, Ukraine for 17.2%, and Russia for 7.2%, together making up 46.8% of total flows. The remaining 53.2% consisted of numerous smaller markets.

MENA's peas imports declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports stood at 5 225 thousand US dollars, a significant drop of 19.3% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 19.9%, averaging a 7.1% annual decline. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 6 638 thousand US dollars, which represented a 1.7% increase.

From 2017 to 2020, the country structure of peas imports into MENA in value terms remained highly diversified. Pakistan accounted for 23.7% of imports in value, Kenya for 16.7%, and India for 5.9%, together making up 46.3% of total flows. The remaining 53.7% was composed of a long tail of smaller markets.
