From 2018 to 2020, Dutch pea production increased from 19 thousand tons to 25 thousand tons, supported by strong demand that pushed up prices and encouraged acreage expansion in the EU. Annual pea consumption had been growing by around 10%, further stimulating the market. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 shifted consumer behavior towards fresh and chilled products, contributing to a market volume rise to 37 thousand tons despite a temporary dip in production.

In 2021, production recovered to 29 thousand tons and market volume peaked at 63 thousand tons. Subsequent growth saw production rise to 37 thousand tons in 2023, supported by the chilled food segment, which grew by 10% in the Dutch market in 2022 due to increasing consumer preference for sustainable and fresh options. The expansion of refrigerated storage and distribution infrastructure in the Netherlands, driven by demand from the food sector, further bolstered the fresh pea market.

In 2020, the Netherlands produced 21 620 tonnes of peas, a decrease of 14.8% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 3%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.0%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 19 020 tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2019 with 25 380 tonnes. The most significant increase was in 2019, when production surged by 33.4%.

In 2020, the value of pea production in the Netherlands was 80.5 million US dollars, a decline of 36.0% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production value fell by 38.9%, with an average annual decrease of 15.2%. The largest increase was observed in 2019, when the value grew by 32.6%.

Peas exports from the Netherlands have grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports reached 17 863 tonnes, a substantial increase of 43.3% over the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports expanded by 94.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 24.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, Belgium, and Norway were the key markets for peas exports in volume, accounting for 35.1%, 29.9%, and 7.5% of total exports, respectively. Together, these three countries represented 72.5% of all export flows.

Peas exports from the Netherlands have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, export value amounted to 66 552 thousand US dollars, a modest rise of 7.7% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, export value grew by 15.5%, equivalent to an average annual rate of 4.9%.
