Earlier Report Observations

At the start of the period, armed conflicts in the MENA region posed challenges to agricultural markets. Despite this, cabbage production showed resilience, growing from 1 249 K t in 2018 to 1 318 K t in 2019. Production stabilized around 1 315 K t in 2020, while the total market volume increased to 1 292 K t, supported by a decline in imports.

A significant expansion occurred from 2021, driven by targeted government investments. The Egyptian government allocated USD 2.73 billion to agricultural development projects like the South Valley initiative, which helped push production to 1 399 K t. Concurrently, a strategic agreement between KissanPro and Barakat Vegetables & Fruit Co improved market access for produce in the region. Continued state investments in Egyptian agriculture in 2022 supported production at 1 384 K t, although a surge in exports to 172 K t that year reduced the domestic market volume to 1 247 K t.

The market rebounded in 2023 with production reaching 1 474 K t and market volume recovering to 1 348 K t. By 2024, import volumes had fallen to 11 K t while exports stood at 131 K t, reflecting ongoing trade adjustments. Key developments that year included Saudi Arabia's allocation of USD 1.2 billion for fertilizer import-substitution projects and a 35% increase in Egypt's fertilizer subsidies, both aimed at strengthening agricultural output. Furthermore, e-commerce in the region grew by 30%, altering distribution channels for fresh produce.
