Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for fresh or chilled peas in Madagascar showed fluctuations. After starting at 1 553 t in 2018, it dipped to 1 442 t in 2019. The following year, however, saw a rebound to 1 530 t. This growth coincided with a sharp drop in pea prices in Antananarivo, where peas were sold at 300 ariary per kapok due to a massive influx onto the market. The availability of imported canned peas likely contributed to lower prices and stimulated consumer demand, supporting the increase in total market volume.

The market contracted again in 2021, falling back to 1 442 t. In 2022, it edged slightly lower to 1 430 t, a period when prices for essential goods like flour and sugar were declining, potentially altering food consumption patterns indirectly. By 2023, the market expanded to 1 505 t despite rising pea prices in regions like Toliara, where a cup of peas jumped from 1 200-1 300 ariary in February to 2 000 ariary in March. Supply chain difficulties and climatic conditions affected availability, but increased domestic production and a rise in imports helped lift overall volume.

In 2024, the Malagasy government implemented measures to boost local production of staple foods through the state-owned SPM, which collects and redistributes products. Fresh vegetable prices, including for peas, have shown significant seasonal increases, impacting consumer behavior. Additionally, heavy rice imports highlight ongoing dependency on foreign supplies, while initiatives to stabilize food prices focus on local production and distribution.
