Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the fresh or chilled pea market in the CIS expanded steadily, with production rising from 100.3 thousand tons to 159.9 thousand tons. This growth was initially supported by state agricultural programs that increased planting areas and yields, while from 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic boosted demand for peas as a protein source, coupled with government subsidies and preferential lending for producers. The upward trend continued in 2021 as new pea varieties with improved agronomic traits were introduced and regulatory changes simplified export procedures, facilitating greater market access.

After peaking in 2021, production contracted to 149.3 thousand tons in 2022 and 142.2 thousand tons in 2023. This decline coincided with the impact of sanctions and counter-sanctions on export-import operations, which disrupted trade flows and created market uncertainty. Despite a reported fourfold increase in exports of Siberian peas to China and India in 2023, broader challenges including currency fluctuations and the tightening of quality control and labeling requirements contributed to the reduction in overall output.
