Earlier Report Observations

The dried shelled peas market in the CIS grew from 1 365 thousand tons in 2018 to 2 576 thousand tons by 2022. This expansion was initially shaped by India's imposition of protective tariffs on pea imports, which redirected global trade flows. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further altered logistics and boosted domestic demand, while rising Russian production, supported by increasing global interest in plant-based protein, continued to fuel market growth through 2022 despite emerging geopolitical tensions and sanctions.

Market volume fell sharply to 1 497 thousand tons in 2023 as exports surged to over 2.5 million tons. This shift was driven by Russia's successful entry into new export markets, particularly China and India, where trade restrictions on Canadian supplies created significant opportunities. The growing popularity of Siberian peas and a strategic export focus redirected a large portion of domestic production abroad.
