Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2019, the preserved olives market volume grew from 141 thousand tons to 162 thousand tons. This increase was driven by a record 22% surge in imports during 2019, alongside the emergence of new product segments like stuffed olives, which broadened the assortment and stimulated consumer demand. Additionally, the devaluation of the ruble led to lower prices in local currency, making olives more affordable.

Market volume contracted to 143 thousand tons in 2020 as the average import cost in rubles rose by 22.8% due to further currency devaluation, increasing retail prices and dampening purchases. In 2021, the market stabilized around 143 thousand tons, supported by steady consumer preferences and a growing concentration of imports among large players.

A sharp decline followed, with the market falling to 103 thousand tons in 2022 and 87 thousand tons in 2023. This drop was caused by currency fluctuations and sanctions pressure, which complicated import operations. The number of importing companies decreased from 266 in 2022 to 188 in 2023, reflecting these challenges and leading to a reduced supply on the market.
