The market volume for fresh or chilled peas in ASEAN started at 17 873 t in 2018 but declined to 15 932 t in 2019. It saw a slight recovery to 16 504 t in 2020 before falling again to 15 085 t in 2021. Over these years, domestic production remained relatively stable around 8 000 t, while imports decreased from 12 333 t to 8 798 t.

In 2022, the market volume grew by 3.3% to 15 586 t. This increase coincided with rising consumer demand for plant-based proteins and the popularity of vegetarian and vegan foods, which supported consumption. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic shifted consumer behavior towards frozen and ready-to-eat products, including peas. However, in 2023, the market volume fell again to 14 899 t. This decline may be linked to the tightening of food labeling and safety regulations in some ASEAN countries, which affected producers and distributors.

For 2024, import volumes rose sharply to 14 772 t, while exports increased to 3 645 t. Factors such as investments in cold storage infrastructure and logistics, along with the expansion of e-commerce, are improving product accessibility in the region. Overall, from 2018 to 2023, the ASEAN pea market contracted by 16.6%, reflecting the impact of external challenges and regulatory shifts.

Between 2017 and 2020, the primary destinations for ASEAN's pea exports in volume terms were Asia (not elsewhere specified) with 39.9% of total exports, India with 13.9%, and Kenya with 8.0%. Together, these three markets accounted for 61.8% of all ASEAN pea exports during this period.

After two consecutive years of growth, ASEAN's pea exports in value terms declined in 2020 to 4 897 thousand US dollars, representing a sharp 28.4% decrease from 2019. The peak export value was recorded in 2019 at 6 841 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase at 18.9%. Over the entire 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 13.4%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 4.7%.
