Morocco remained a significant external producer and supplier to the region throughout this period.

The market volume declined to 198.1 thousand tonnes in 2023, primarily due to a heat wave in South Africa during October 2023 that reduced peach harvests. Concurrently, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) began facilitating intra-regional trade, potentially shifting import and export flows.

In value terms, the market expanded from 290.3 million US dollars in 2018 to 396.1 million in 2022, then moderated to 386.0 million in 2023, reflecting adjustments in supply and trade conditions.

Sub-Saharan Africa's production of peaches and nectarines has increased for the second year in a row. In 2019, output stood at 183.5 thousand tonnes, which was the lowest level recorded during this period. Production then rose by 9.9% in 2020 to reach 209.1 thousand tonnes. The most significant decline occurred in 2018, when production fell by 13.5%.

The value of peaches and nectarines production in Sub-Saharan Africa declined by 6.9% year-on-year in 2020, reaching 348.8 million US dollars. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 331.1 million US dollars, while the highest came in 2019 at 374.6 million US dollars. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 2.3%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 0.8%. The largest increase occurred in 2019, when the value rose by 13.1%.

Exports peaches and nectarines from Sub-Saharan Africa

After declining for two consecutive years, Sub-Saharan Africa's export volume of peaches and nectarines rebounded in 2020. Exports fell to their lowest point in 2019 at 18 505 tonnes, representing a sharp decline of 32.7% that year. However, in 2020, exports increased by 20.5% to reach 22 301 tonnes. Overall, between 2017 and 2020, export volume decreased by 34.4%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 13.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Kingdom, Belarus, and the Netherlands were the top destinations for Sub-Saharan Africa's peaches and nectarines exports by volume. The United Kingdom accounted for 30.0% of exports, Belarus for 26.5%, and the Netherlands for 14.1%. Together, these three countries represented 70.5% of total export flows during this period.

Following two years of contraction, the value of peaches and nectarines exports from Sub-Saharan Africa showed a modest recovery in 2020. Exports reached their lowest point in 2019 at 36 432 thousand US dollars, after a significant decline of 26.6% that year. In 2020, export value increased slightly by 2.1% to 37 210 thousand US dollars. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 31.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of -12.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the United Kingdom, Belarus, and the Netherlands were the principal buyers of peaches and nectarines from Sub-Saharan Africa in value terms. The United Kingdom accounted for 39.1% of export value, Belarus for 18.9%, and the Netherlands for 14.9%. Collectively, these three markets represented 72.9% of total export value during this timeframe.

Sub-Saharan Africa's import volume of peaches and nectarines fell sharply in 2020, declining by 48.5% from the previous year to 2 571 tonnes. The largest increase occurred in 2019, when imports rose by 3.0%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, import volume decreased by 55.6%, which corresponds to an average annual decline of 23.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, the import structure for peaches and nectarines in Sub-Saharan Africa was relatively balanced rather than concentrated. Spain was the largest source, accounting for 41.0% of imports by volume, followed by Portugal at 3.3% and Egypt at 1.7%. Together, these three countries represented 46.0% of total import flows, with the remaining 54.0% coming from numerous other countries.

For the second consecutive year, the value of peaches and nectarines imports into Sub-Saharan Africa declined in 2020. Imports fell by 33.0% compared to 2019, reaching 5 493 thousand US dollars. The highest import value was recorded in 2018 at 8 784 thousand US dollars, following an increase of 3.2% that year. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value decreased by 35.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -13.6%.

Throughout 2017-2020, Spain, Portugal, and the United Arab Emirates formed the core group of markets for Sub-Saharan Africa's peaches and nectarines imports in value terms. Spain accounted for 45.6% of import value, Portugal for 4.9%, and the United Arab Emirates for 1.3%. Together, these three countries represented 51.8% of total import flows during this period.
