A notable rise in exports, which surged to 96 thousand tonnes in 2023, contributed to the reduction in volume available for domestic consumption during these years.

Imports remained at low levels throughout the period, confirming the market's reliance on local production. Despite the post-2020 decline, the overall market size in 2023 remained substantially higher than the 2018 baseline, reflecting the earlier growth phase.

Sub-Saharan Africa's production of melons and papayas has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 5 023 thousand tons, marking an 18.0% increase from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production surged by 84%, with an average annual growth rate of 22.5%.

In 2020, the value of melons and papayas produced in Sub-Saharan Africa reached 5 011 million US dollars, up 23.2% from the year before. Exports melons and papayas from Sub-Saharan Africa

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa exported 44 138 tons of melons and papayas, a significant 13.4% decrease from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 21.3%, with an average annual rate of 6.6%. The lowest export volume was in 2018 at 32 868 tons, while the highest was in 2019 at 50 994 tons, which also saw the largest increase of 55.1%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Spain, France, and Italy were the top destinations for Sub-Saharan Africa's melons and papayas exports by volume. Spain accounted for 44.7% of exports, France for 5.8%, and Italy for 3.9%, together making up 54.5% of total export flows.

Imports melons and papayas to Sub-Saharan Africa

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa imported 12 745 tons of melons and papayas, a substantial 15.2% increase from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports rose by 20.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.5%. The largest decline was in 2019, at 6.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Morocco, Portugal, and Spain were the main suppliers of melons and papayas to Sub-Saharan Africa by volume. Morocco contributed 9.6% of imports, Portugal 2.1%, and Spain 1.7%, but their combined share was only 13.4% of total imports, indicating a diversified sourcing structure.

Sub-Saharan Africa's imports of melons and papayas declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 9 651 thousand US dollars, a 19.4% drop from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value decreased by 2.6%, with an average annual decline of 0.9%. The highest value was in 2018 at 12 104 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 22.2%.

The import structure by value from 2017 to 2020 shows a diverse range of partners. Egypt accounted for 6.5% of import value, Portugal for 5.8%, and Spain for 5.2%, together making up just 17.4% of total flows. The remaining 82.6% was spread across many smaller markets.
