Earlier Report Observations

The European market for fresh peaches and nectarines saw considerable movement between 2018 and 2023. Market volume remained near 4.8 million tons in 2018 and 2019 before a steep decline to 3.9 million tons in 2020 and a further drop to 3.4 million tons by 2022. This multi-year contraction was abruptly reversed in 2023, when the market recovered to 4.1 million tons.

The sharp downturn was directly caused by a series of extreme weather events. Devastating frosts in Italy cut its production by 35% in 2020, while similar conditions in Greece contributed to a continent-wide harvest that was 15% smaller than the previous year. The following year, 2021, brought the smallest European crop in three decades due to continued adverse climate factors, severely constraining supply.

By 2023, growing conditions had normalized, allowing European production to rebound by 14% compared to 2022 and restoring market volume. Underlying this recovery, structural changes persisted, such as the ongoing economic-driven reduction of peach orchard area in Greece, which continued to shift the supply base toward other stone fruits.
