Earlier Report Observations

European in-shell almond market volume grew from 477.9 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 566.9 thousand tonnes in 2020. This surge was primarily driven by a record harvest in 2020, facilitated by favorable spring weather conditions for almond tree blossoming. Concurrently, investments in almond orchard expansion in France, with planted area increasing and projects targeting 1 500 hectares by 2030, bolstered domestic production capacity.

Market volume then contracted to 516.2 thousand tonnes in 2021 and further to 407.5 thousand tonnes in 2022. During this period, Europe maintained its lead in almond-based product innovation, with over 5 500 new launches in 2021, fueled by the strong trend toward plant-based foods. Additionally, new application segments such as cosmetics, using almond oil and shells, gained traction.

In 2023, the market recovered to 483.4 thousand tonnes, nearing pre-pandemic levels. This rebound coincided with ongoing market structuring, exemplified by French almond producer La Compagnie des Amandes expanding its planted area beyond 300 hectares.
