After two years of decline, pastry production in Eastern Africa rebounded. In 2020, the output was valued at 451.1 M $ US, showing a modest 2.8% increase compared to 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 period, production value fell by 27.5%, with an average annual decline of 10.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 439.0 M $ US, which also saw the largest drop of 17.8%.

Following two years of growth, cross-border pastry shipments from Eastern Africa declined. In 2020, the region exported 7 082 t of pastry, a 4.2% decrease from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports overall increased by 8.5%, with an average annual rate of 2.8%. The peak was in 2019 at 7 395 t, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 10.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States (30.6% of exports in kind), the United Arab Emirates (29.2%), and Sweden (10.5%) were the top destinations for pastry from Eastern Africa, collectively accounting for 70.3% of total exports in kind.

Foreign pastry supplies from Eastern Africa declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 11 521 K $ US, a 6.5% decrease year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 26.8%, with an average annual decline of 9.9%.
