This trend reversed in 2022 with a contraction of approximately 17%, bringing the market to 263.9 thousand tons. The decline continued into 2023, reaching 236.3 thousand tons, which was about 12% below the 2018 starting point.

Pastry production in Eastern Africa grew for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 277.3 K t of pastry, marking a 5.3% increase from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production rose by 7.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.4%.

After two years of decline, pastry production in Eastern Africa rebounded. In 2020, the output was valued at 451.1 M $ US, showing a modest 2.8% increase compared to 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 period, production value fell by 27.5%, with an average annual decline of 10.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 439.0 M $ US, which also saw the largest drop of 17.8%.

Exports pastry from Eastern Africa

Exports in kind, t

Following two years of growth, cross-border pastry shipments from Eastern Africa declined. In 2020, the region exported 7 082 t of pastry, a 4.2% decrease from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports overall increased by 8.5%, with an average annual rate of 2.8%. The peak was in 2019 at 7 395 t, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 10.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States (30.6% of exports in kind), the United Arab Emirates (29.2%), and Sweden (10.5%) were the top destinations for pastry from Eastern Africa, collectively accounting for 70.3% of total exports in kind.

Foreign pastry supplies from Eastern Africa declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 11 521 K $ US, a 6.5% decrease year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 26.8%, with an average annual decline of 9.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States (31.4% of exports in value terms), the United Arab Emirates (21.0%), and Sweden (7.3%) remained the primary buyers of pastry from Eastern Africa, together making up 59.8% of total exports in value terms.

Imports pastry to Eastern Africa

In 2020, imported pastry volumes in Eastern Africa reached 16 585 t, an 8.5% increase from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 12.8%, with an average annual rate of 4.1%. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 2.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, pastry imports to Eastern Africa were not highly concentrated. South Africa (20.2% of imports in kind), France (13.3%), and Malaysia (12.9%) together accounted for only 46.4% of total flows.

In 2020, pastry deliveries to Eastern Africa stood at 44 307 K $ US, a 3.0% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports rose by 10.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.3%. The highest value was in 2018 at 46 134 K $ US, which also saw the largest increase of 14.7%, while the largest decline occurred in 2019 at 6.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, South Africa (18.3% of imports in value terms), France (16.9%), and Malaysia (16.9%) continued to lead as the main suppliers of pastry to Eastern Africa, jointly representing 52.1% of total imports in value terms.
