From 2021, the market entered a phase of steady growth, reaching 412 thousand tons by 2023. A 68% surge in palm kernel oil import prices in 2021 provided impetus for domestic production. Subsequently, rising consumer demand for processed foods in West Africa and the expanding use of palm kernel cake in animal feed and biodiesel production created new applications and supported increased consumption.

Africa's palm-kernel oilcake production has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, Africa produced 406.3 K t of palm-kernel oilcake, marking a 1.5% rise compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 14.2%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.5%.

After two years of decline, Africa's palm-kernel oilcake production has rebounded. In 2020, the output was valued at 30 977 K $ US, representing a 19.8% increase from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production rose by 6.7%, with a CAGR of 2.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 25 868 K $ US, which also saw the largest decline of 8.8%.

Exports palm-kernel oilcake from Africa

Following two years of decrease, Africa's exported volumes of palm-kernel oilcake have increased. In 2020, Africa exported 64.6 K t, which is 40.1% higher than in 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 15.1%, with a CAGR of 5.3%. The minimum volume was recorded in 2019 at 46.1 K t, which also experienced the largest decline of 23.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Portugal, Turkey, and Norway were the leading destinations for Africa's palm-kernel oilcake exports in kind. Portugal accounted for 51.2% of exports, Turkey for 12.7%, and Norway for 7.6%, together making up 71.5% of total flows.

After a two-year reduction, Africa's foreign supplies of palm-kernel oilcake have increased. In 2020, exports reached 4 926 K $ US, a 65.3% rise year-over-year.
