Earlier Report Observations

Production of paddy rice in Gambia rose substantially from 26 800 t in 2018 to 47 410 t in 2023. This expansion began with rising local rice prices in 2019 and 2020, which made increased cultivation more profitable for farmers and directly spurred higher output.

Government policy interventions further accelerated growth from 2021. The planned ban on rice imports aimed to shift demand toward domestic production, while the 2022 launch of a FAO and China-funded rice and millet transformation project, worth 110 million dalasis, provided direct investment. Continued support through the 2023 Sarro Rice initiative and the distribution of 42 million dalasis in GIRAV project subsidies to rice farmers helped maintain production increases despite challenges like high input costs.
