The Gambian millet market expanded from 36 804 t in 2018 to 42 888 t in 2020, driven by state-led agricultural support. In 2018, the government implemented the GIRAV project, distributing 42 million dalasis in subsidies to farmers, including millet producers, to boost output. This was aligned with the National Development Plan 2018-2021, which prioritized agriculture and value-chain improvement for subsistence crops like millet. The growth continued into 2020 with the adoption of the National Horticulture Sector Strategy 2020-2024, further reinforcing agricultural value chains.

Market volume then contracted to 37 421 t in 2022 as inflation reached 8%, raising food prices and dampening consumption. Although a major 110 million dalasis rice and millet food systems transformation project was launched in 2023 to strengthen production, processing, and marketing, market volume saw a slight further decrease to 36 603 t that year, amid broader economic challenges including budget deficits and interest rate fluctuations that affected agricultural financing.

Gambia's millet production grew for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 42 888 tonnes of millet, marking a 7.1% increase from 2019. However, over the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production fell by 17.5%, which translates to an average annual decline of 6.2%. The lowest output was in 2018, at 36 804 tonnes, when production dropped by 29.2%. In contrast, the largest gain occurred in 2019, with an 8.8% rise.
