Earlier Report Observations

The Chilean paddy rice market commenced the period at a robust level of 192.8 thousand tons in 2018, supported by the decade's peak planted area of 29.5 thousand hectares in the 2017/18 season. A contraction began in 2019 as notable increases in domestic rice prices and international logistical problems raised production and distribution costs, contributing to a decline in output and market volume.

A sharp and accelerated downturn followed from 2021, driven by a continued collapse in planted area. Sown hectares fell to a decade-low of 20.7 thousand in the 2021/22 season and remained under 20 thousand in 2022/23. This direct reduction in cultivation severely limited harvests, causing production and total market volume to plummet to a low of 101.0 thousand tons by 2022, with high international rice prices further pressuring the import-dependent market structure.

The market saw a modest recovery in 2023, with volume rising to 109.8 thousand tons.
