Earlier Report Observations

Chile's triticale production increased from 142.6 thousand tons in 2018 to 147.9 thousand tons in 2019. This growth was supported by the launch of the Chile Origen Consciente sustainability program, which encouraged certified standards in the agri-food sector, and by favorable weather conditions during the 2019-2020 season that boosted cereal yields. The announcement of a new processing plant with an annual capacity of about 100 thousand tons also signaled fresh investment, though it redirected some volume from the open market. Output then fell sharply to 92.9 thousand tons in 2020 and further to 55.2 thousand tons in 2021.

Production rebounded to 81.1 thousand tons in 2022. This recovery was primarily driven by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which raised international grain prices and made domestic triticale cultivation more attractive, and by the intervention of the state-owned company Cotrisa, which stabilized the local wheat market and provided weekly price references, supporting related cereals. The depreciation of the Chilean peso and improvements in port logistics also contributed. In 2023, output declined to 66.0 thousand tons. That year, the Agricultural Research Institute (INIA) presented three new triticale varieties for animal feed with improved disease resistance and yield, though their commercial release is scheduled for 2025.
