Earlier Report Observations

Chilean rice production increased from 148.2 thousand tons in 2018 to 219 thousand tons in 2020, driven by the adoption of innovative practices like the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) for water and seed savings, along with financing from the milling industry. During this period, the National Rice Commission helped establish reference prices, and training sessions equipped farmers with new technologies.

From 2021 onwards, a severe mega-drought reduced planted area and created irrigation difficulties, leading production to fall to 157.8 thousand tons by 2022. The decline was exacerbated by international price shocks following India's export ban. In response, the government's Siembra por Chile program injected significant funds into agriculture, contributing to a partial recovery to 165.1 thousand tons in 2023.

Throughout the 2018-2025 period, imports consistently supplied around 73% of domestic consumption, highlighting the market's growing dependence on foreign rice. Ongoing efforts to develop climate-resilient varieties and expand SRI adoption aimed to improve the sustainability of local production amid persistent climatic challenges.
