The OSB market volume in Western Europe reached about 3.3 million m³ in 2018, supported by growth in the construction industry and increasing use of OSB in modular and prefabricated building methods. Over the next two years, volume declined to 2.7 million m³ in 2020, partly due to supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The market recovered to 3.4 million m³ in 2021, stimulated by political and economic measures promoting sustainable construction and increased investment in infrastructure projects. However, in 2022, a sharp drop to 2.0 million m³ occurred, primarily due to global energy price increases and logistics problems.

In 2023, market volume grew to 2.6 million m³ as new production capacities, such as the opening of Kronospan plants in Eastern Europe, increased supply, while demand for OSB in the construction industry, especially for wet environments, remained robust.

Western Europe's OSB production rebounded after two years of decline. In 2020, production reached 2 013 K m³, marking a modest 4.3% increase compared to 2019. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production actually fell by 9.3%, which translates to an average annual decline of 3.2%. The lowest point was in 2019, with output at 1 931 K m³, while the sharpest drop occurred in 2018, when production decreased by 10.1%.

Exports OSB from Western Europe

Cross-border shipments of OSB from Western Europe recovered after two years of losses. In 2020, exports stood at 1 529 K m³, showing a significant 30.9% rise from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 10.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.4%. The lowest level was recorded in 2019 at 1 168 K m³, and the largest decline happened in 2018, when exports fell by 12.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, OSB exports from Western Europe were not heavily concentrated. The top three destinations—the United Kingdom (6.7% of exports in kind), Switzerland (5.4%), and China (3.5%)—together accounted for only 15.6% of total export flows.

In 2020, OSB deliveries from Western Europe in value terms amounted to 357.0 M $ US, representing a 12.1% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 19.3%, with an average annual rate of 6.1%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, when exports dropped by 7.0%, while the biggest increase was in 2018, with a 14.4% rise.

Between 2017 and 2020, the partner landscape for OSB exports in value terms was diverse. Switzerland (6.9% of exports in value terms), the United Kingdom (4.5%), and China (4.1%) together made up just 15.6% of total flows, leaving a substantial 84.4% distributed among many other countries.

Imports OSB to Western Europe

In 2020, OSB shipments to Western Europe from abroad totaled 2 251 K m³, up by 8.2% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports surged by 55.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 15.8%. The largest decline was in 2019, when imports fell by 3.5%, while the biggest increase occurred in 2018, with a 48.8% jump.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Kingdom (24.7% of imports in kind), Czechia (22.0%), and Poland (6.5%) were the main markets for OSB imports into Western Europe, together accounting for 53.3% of total import flows.

In 2020, Western Europe's OSB imports in value terms reached 523.6 M $ US, up by 8.3% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 21.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.7%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 572.6 M $ US. The largest decline happened in 2019, with a 15.5% drop, while the biggest increase was in 2018, when imports rose by 32.7%.
