Earlier Report Observations

The particle board market in Western Europe saw considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. Market volume surged by 21% to 12.7 million m³ in 2019, then fell by 19% to 10.3 million m³ in 2020. It stabilized near 10.5 million m³ in 2021 before jumping 26% to 13.3 million m³ in 2022, only to drop sharply by 29% to 9.5 million m³ in 2023.

The steep 2023 contraction was driven by sharply rising production costs and persistent supply chain pressures. Soaring prices for wood, energy, and adhesives increased manufacturing expenses, while higher transport costs and logistical disruptions constrained material flows. These factors dampened both supply and demand, compounded by growing competition from alternative materials like honeycomb boards made from waste paper.

In 2024, the sector continued to face tight raw material conditions, with timber harvesting in Germany falling by 13.3%. Elevated wood and energy prices remained key cost drivers, though ongoing demand from construction and furniture segments, alongside increased investment in automation and digitalization, provided some market support.
