Roundwood coniferous market in Western Europe

The coniferous roundwood market in Western Europe experienced a decline in physical volume over the period from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 111.1 million m³ in 2018, total market size fell to 98.2 million m³ in 2023, representing an overall contraction of 11.6%. This downward trend was not consistent, however, as the market saw significant year-to-year fluctuations.

After an initial drop to 104.2 million m³ in 2019, market volume recovered to 106.8 million m³ in 2020 and reached a short-term peak of 107.3 million m³ in 2021. This recovery was reversed from 2022 onward, with the market shrinking to 103.6 million m³ in 2022 and falling further to 98.2 million m³ in 2023, its lowest point in the period. Domestic production followed a similar pattern, peaking at 110.1 million m³ in 2021 before declining sharply to 96.1 million m³ in 2023.

Western Europe's roundwood coniferous production has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 103.3 million cubic meters of roundwood coniferous, marking a modest 4.2% increase compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 15.3%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 4.9%.

Western Europe's roundwood coniferous production value has declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 8 515 million US dollars, showing a gradual decrease of 4.9% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production value increased by 11.2%, with an annualized growth rate of 3.6%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 9 699 million US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 7.7%, while the largest increase was in 2018 at 26.6%.

Western Europe's roundwood coniferous exports have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, export volume reached 15 189 thousand cubic meters, representing a sharp gain of 43.6% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 120.5%, with an annualized growth rate of 30.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, exports in kind were distributed across a wide range of partner countries. China accounted for 28.7% of exports in kind, Italy for 7.0%, and Czechia for 1.7%, with these three countries together making up just 37.4% of total flows.

Roundwood coniferous exports from Western Europe have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 1 252 million US dollars, which is 31.0% higher than in 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 112.5%, with an annualized growth rate of 28.6%.

The partner structure of exports in value terms remained fragmented from 2017 to 2020. China accounted for 32.7% of exports in value terms, Italy for 7.2%, and Spain for 1.4%, with these three countries together representing only 41.4% of total flows, and no single country held a dominant share.

Imports coniferous roundwood to Western Europe

After a two-year decline, the volume of roundwood coniferous imports into Western Europe increased. In 2020, imports were recorded at 18 695 thousand cubic meters, showing a strong rise of 19.4% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 6.3%, with an annualized decline rate of 2.1%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 15 651 thousand cubic meters, which also saw the largest decline of 20.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Czechia, Poland, and Slovenia were the largest suppliers of roundwood coniferous to Western Europe, accounting for 31.3%, 10.1%, and 5.6% of imports in kind, respectively. However, their combined contribution was limited to 47.0% of total imports in kind, reflecting a diversified country structure.

Roundwood coniferous import volumes in Western Europe declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 1 280 million US dollars, constituting a decline of 2.5% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 16.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -5.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 1 636 million US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 19.8%, while the largest increase was in 2018 at 6.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, there was no single dominant market for roundwood coniferous imports in value terms. Czechia accounted for 31.5% of imports in value terms, Poland for 8.3%, and Slovenia for 6.5%, with these three countries together taking only 46.4% of total imports in value terms, while many smaller partners each held modest individual shares.
