Earlier Report Observations

Orange production in Mozambique remained relatively stable between 2018 and 2023, fluctuating around 67 000 t per year. The market volume gradually increased from 66 504 t in 2018 to 69 044 t in 2020, reflecting steady domestic output complemented by growing imports. After a slight dip in 2021, the market stabilized at approximately 68 000 t in 2022.

A significant shift occurred in 2023 when the orange market expanded by 6.4% to reach 72 325 t. This growth was primarily driven by a sharp rise in imports, which jumped to 6 952 t from under 1 000 t in previous years. While domestic production held steady at 67 000 t, the influx of imported oranges substantially boosted total supply, even as exports also increased to 1 627 t.

Preliminary trade data for 2024 shows imports at 2 141 t, lower than the 2023 peak but still above pre-2023 levels, with minimal export activity. This suggests a continued reliance on imported oranges to meet domestic demand, though full market volume figures are not yet available.
