Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, the orange market volume in Tunisia expanded significantly from 333.5 thousand tons to 423.1 thousand tons. This growth was primarily driven by the entry into production of new orange plantations in traditional areas like Cap Bon and newer regions such as Béjà, Jendouba, and Sidi Bouzid. The introduction of new varieties like Clementine alongside traditional ones helped increase overall output.

The market then contracted to 356.3 thousand tons in 2020 due to a combination of drought, rising input costs, and logistical disruptions that hampered production. A recovery followed in 2021, bringing the market volume back to 422.7 thousand tons, although reported climatic challenges might have limited further growth. In 2022, the market plunged to 332.4 thousand tons after a forecasted 17% drop in the citrus harvest, linked to persistent water stress and unfavorable growing conditions.

By 2023, the market showed a modest rebound to 350.1 thousand tons. This occurred despite reports of a 17% decline in the citrus harvest in the Cap Bon region, but was supported by Tunisia's strengthened export focus on the Libyan market, which became a key destination.
