From 2018 to 2020, the Moroccan orange market volume saw notable shifts. The 2018-2019 season marked a peak in citrus production, supporting a market volume of 870 thousand tonnes that year and a rise to over 1 million tonnes in 2019 as Morocco consolidated its position as a global exporter. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic created high worldwide demand for oranges, but domestic production fell, reducing the market volume to 698 thousand tonnes.

After a recovery to 944 thousand tonnes in 2021, the market reached its highest point in 2022 at 1.1 million tonnes. During this time, increased competition from Egyptian exports began to pressure Morocco's overseas sales, making more fruit available domestically. However, by 2023, persistent drought and the impacts of climate change led to a sharp drop in harvests, causing the market volume to contract to 636 thousand tonnes and resulting in the worst export season in at least eight years.

In 2024, Moroccan orange exports staged a significant comeback, with shipments to the United States multiplying and total export volume growing by 38%. Nevertheless, a six-year drought continued to limit agricultural output, constraining production levels below previous records.

In 2020, Morocco produced 806 thousand tons of oranges, representing a significant decline of 31.8% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 22.3%, with an average annual decrease of 8.1%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 1 182 thousand tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 16.0%.

Morocco's orange exports declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 108.2 thousand tons, marking a sharp drop of 26.0% from the prior year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 33.8%, with an average annual decline of 12.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Spain, and France were the primary destinations for Morocco's orange exports, accounting for 52.6% of total export volumes. The Netherlands led with 19.2%, followed by Spain at 18.5%, and France at 14.9%.

Morocco's orange export value increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 89 805 thousand US dollars, showing a slight rise of 1.4% year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value grew by 5.5%, with an average annual increase of 1.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 84 203 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 1.1%. In contrast, 2019 saw the highest increase of 5.2%.

During 2017-2020, the Netherlands, Spain, and France were the largest buyers of Moroccan oranges by value, collectively representing 55.5% of total export earnings. The Netherlands accounted for 20.5%, Spain for 19.4%, and France for 15.6%.

In 2020, imports dropped to 0.1 thousand tons, a sharp reduction of 50.8% from the previous year. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a surge of 726.5%.
