Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the European watermelon market contracted steadily, with volume falling from 7 222 thousand metric tons to 6 704 thousand metric tons and value declining from $95.2 billion to $86.9 billion.

Market volume continued to drop to 6 278 thousand metric tons in 2021, yet the market's value rose to $101.4 billion, reflecting higher average prices. In 2022, volume saw a slight decrease to 6 150 thousand metric tons, while value fell to $90.6 billion.

The decline in volume accelerated in 2023, reaching 5 485 thousand metric tons. This was driven by relatively weak consumer demand, influenced by unfavorable weather conditions and intense price competition from Turkish exporters. Retail focus also shifted toward clementines, further limiting watermelon promotions in supermarkets.
