The Ethiopian orange market volume showed considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. Consumption began at 72 000 t in 2018, edged up to 73 000 t the following year, then contracted sharply to 51 000 t in 2020 and 44 000 t in 2021.

A recovery to 62 000 t occurred in 2022, but the market volume declined again to 53 000 t in 2023. In value terms, the market followed a similar pattern, falling from $30.8 million in 2018 to a low of $16.3 million in 2021 before recovering to $24.4 million in 2023.

The rise in market value in 2023, despite a lower volume, points to an increase in average prices for oranges during the latter part of the period.

Ethiopia's orange production saw two years of growth before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 74 540 tons. However, in 2020, output fell to 52 621 tons, representing a 29.4% decrease from the previous year. The most significant year-on-year increase occurred in 2018, when production rose by 42.8%.

Ethiopia's orange production value declined for the second consecutive year. In 2018, it peaked at 31 345 thousand US dollars, with that year also seeing the largest annual increase of 29.0%. By 2020, the value had dropped to 20 851 thousand US dollars, down 32.3% from the prior year. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, production value decreased by 14.2%, averaging an annual decline of 5.0%.

Exports oranges from Ethiopia

Exports in kind, t

Following two years of decline, Ethiopia's orange export volume rebounded. In 2019, exports hit their lowest point at 1 639 tons. In 2020, they increased to 1 996 tons, up 21.8% year-over-year. The sharpest annual decline occurred in 2018, falling by 19.3%. Over the 2017-2020 period, total exports decreased by 14%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 4.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Djibouti was overwhelmingly the primary destination for Ethiopia's orange exports in volume terms, accounting for 99.8% of the total.

After two years of contraction, Ethiopia's orange export value showed growth. In 2019, it reached its minimum at 677 thousand US dollars. In 2020, exports rose to 791 thousand US dollars, marking a solid 16.8% increase from the previous year. The largest annual decline was in 2018, at 27.1%. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, export value fell by 27.5%, averaging an annual decrease of 10.2%.
