Orange production in the Dominican Republic declined sharply from 136 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 97.2 thousand tonnes in 2020, with the market size falling from 135.8 thousand tonnes to 97.1 thousand tonnes over the same period. This contraction was followed by a gradual recovery in subsequent years.

From 2021, trade dynamics shifted as Colombian oranges gained market access to the Dominican Republic in July 2021, opening a new import source. This change supported rising imports, which increased from 2.8 thousand tonnes in 2020 to 3.5 thousand tonnes in 2021 and 4.4 thousand tonnes in 2022. The first shipment of 23 tonnes of Colombian oranges arrived in 2022, facilitated by phytosanitary diplomacy that eased entry requirements. During this period, domestic production slowly rebounded, reaching 100 thousand tonnes in 2022, and the market size grew to 100.8 thousand tonnes.

The recovery continued into 2023, with production rising to 113.1 thousand tonnes and the market size expanding to 114.9 thousand tonnes. Imports further increased to 5.4 thousand tonnes, reflecting sustained demand and the established trade flow from Colombia.

In 2020, the country produced 97.2 thousand tons of oranges, marking a 27.7% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 25.8%, which translates to an average annual decline of 9.5%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 136.0 thousand tons, with the largest year-over-year increase of 3.9% also occurring that year.

In 2020, orange output was valued at 67 931 thousand US dollars, representing a significant contraction of 20.9% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, the production value decreased by 30.4%, averaging an 11.4% annual decline over this period.
