Vietnam's orange production and market volume entered a period of strong expansion from 2018, with output rising from 855 thousand tons to over 1.8 million tons by 2023. The initial growth was underpinned by a rapid increase in planting area, as farmers focused on supplying the domestic fresh fruit market. While traditional practices using local seeded varieties involved challenges like pest susceptibility and environmental impact, the sheer expansion of orchards drove volumes higher.

A significant acceleration occurred in 2021, when production jumped by over 425 thousand tons. This surge aligned with concerted industry efforts to enhance quality and yields. Key initiatives included trials of imported seedless orange varieties promising higher sweetness and productivity, and the adoption of grafting techniques onto pomelo rootstocks for faster, disease-resistant propagation. These innovations, alongside projects to strengthen value chains and market linkages, supported the continued output growth through 2023.

By 2023, market volume reached 1.85 million tons, though the pace of growth moderated. The operating environment became influenced by broader macroeconomic factors, including government measures to control inflation and increases in the regional minimum wage, which raised production costs and affected domestic demand. Periods of seasonal oversupply, particularly from the Mekong Delta, also exerted downward pressure on prices, underscoring the market's primary orientation toward local fresh consumption.
