By 2023, the market recovered to 94 341 thousand liters, aided by further expansion of healthy beverage options such as kombucha and plant-based drinks, and the harmonization of EU commercial standards.

Portugal's production of fruit and vegetable juices fell for the second year in a row. In 2021, the country produced 30 million liters, which is 16.9% less than in 2020. Looking back from 2018 to 2021, production dropped by 8.1%, averaging a 2.8% annual decline. The peak was in 2019, with 36 million liters produced, marking the largest increase of 10.9% during this period.

In 2021, Portugal exported 27,744 thousand liters of fruit and vegetable juices, showing little change from the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, exports decreased by 11.7%, with an average annual decline of 4.1%. The lowest point was in 2020, at 27,703 thousand liters, which saw the largest drop of 12.0%. In contrast, 2019 recorded the highest export volume of 31,466 thousand liters, with a slight increase of 0.1%.

From 2018 to 2021, Portugal's export market for fruit and vegetable juices was quite diverse. France, Cabo Verde, and Spain were the top destinations, accounting for 16.5%, 16.3%, and 15.4% of exports, respectively. Together, they made up just 48.3% of total flows, while the remaining 51.7% was spread across many other countries.

Portugal's export value of fruit and vegetable juices rose for the second consecutive year. In 2021, exports reached 62.3 million US dollars, a significant increase of 42.9% compared to 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, export value grew by 38.1%, averaging an 11.4% annual rise. The lowest value was in 2019, at 40.5 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 10.2%.

Between 2018 and 2021, Portugal's export market in value terms remained highly diversified. The United States, Spain, and the United Kingdom were the leading markets, contributing 19.0%, 13.7%, and 13.3% of export value, respectively. Combined, they accounted for only 46.0% of total flows, with the remaining 54.0% coming from a wide range of smaller markets.

Imports fruit and vegetable juices to Portugal

From 2018 to 2021, Spain was the dominant source for Portugal's imports of fruit and vegetable juices, making up 83.4% of total volume. Other countries contributed the remaining share, forming a diverse group of smaller partners.

Following a two-year drop, Portugal's import value for fruit and vegetable juices increased in 2021. Imports amounted to 124.5 million US dollars, a substantial rise of 19.4% over the previous year. The lowest value was recorded in 2020, at 104.3 million US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 10.7%.

In the 2018-2021 period, Spain, Ireland, and the Netherlands were the main suppliers of fruit and vegetable juices to Portugal in value terms.
