In 2018, Finland's potato starch production was supported by key domestic players like Finnamyl, Lapuan Peruna, and Raision Tehtaat, which invested in capacity development and worked with contract farmers. The use of starch in the pulp and paper industry since the 1970s had increased demand for local production, while diverse applications in food processing—including soups, sauces, and baked goods—ensured steady consumption. After a slight dip in 2019, market volume grew in 2020 and surged by 11% in 2021, reaching a peak of 45 thousand tons.

From 2022 onward, the market contracted sharply, falling to 30 thousand tons in 2023 and 26 thousand tons in 2024. Production dropped by over 20% between 2021 and 2024, while imports rose to 3.6 thousand tons in 2024. Despite the decline, the market saw development toward sustainable uses: Chemigate processed starch for bio-based applications, and the HoReCa segment expanded with products like Capsi cold-gelling modified starch. Environmental initiatives, such as a project involving the Berner group, highlighted starch's role in the bioeconomy.
