The market for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in Sri Lanka showed considerable volume fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. Starting from 31 525 t in 2018, the market size dipped slightly to 30 089 t in 2019 before surging by over 30% to reach 39 138 t in 2020. This peak was entirely driven by a significant increase in domestic production, which rose to 38 491 t that year.

Following the 2020 peak, the market contracted for two consecutive years, falling to 36 945 t in 2021 and then sharply to 27 181 t in 2022. The decline coincided with a complete halt in imports, which had ceased after 2020, making the market fully reliant on domestic output. A partial recovery occurred in 2023, with the market volume growing to 29 978 t, supported by a modest rebound in production and the resumption of a small import volume.

Throughout the period, the market's dynamics were primarily determined by changes in local production, as imports played a negligible role after 2020 and exports remained minimal. The overall volume in 2023 remained below the levels seen during the 2020-2021 period.

From 2017 to 2020, Switzerland was the leading buyer of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts from Sri Lanka, accounting for 62.2% of exports in kind. It was followed by the Maldives at 10.9% and the United Kingdom at 7.5%. Together, these three countries made up 80.6% of Sri Lanka's total exports in kind during this period.
