This initial surge was supported by active groundnut cultivation cycles in key producing regions such as Telangana, where over 12 000 hectares were dedicated to the crop, boosting production volumes.

Market growth continued through 2023, reaching 10 676 thousand tonnes. The sustained increase was underpinned by India's established two-crop harvesting cycle, which enabled year-round production under rain-fed conditions and maintained a steady supply to the market.

In 2020, the region produced 10 324 thousand tons, marking a modest 4.0% rise compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 12.3%, which translates to an average annual increase of 3.9%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 7 249 thousand tons, when output fell by 21.2%. However, this was followed by a significant rebound in 2019, with production jumping by 36.9%.

The value of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts production in Southern Asia also rose for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 14 551 million US dollars, showing a strong increase of 15.2% from 2019. Over the four-year span from 2017 to 2020, however, the production value decreased by 7.1%, averaging an annual decline of 2.4%. The lowest value was in 2018 at 9 906 million US dollars, which represented a sharp drop of 36.8%. This was followed by a recovery in 2019, with the value climbing by 27.5%.

In 2020, exports totaled 1 605 tons, a substantial decrease of 66.4% from the previous year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 4 775 tons. The most notable surge occurred in 2018, when exports skyrocketed by 434.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey and Malaysia were the top two destinations for exports in kind, accounting for 3.9% and 2.0% of total flows, respectively. Together, they made up 5.9% of all exports.

The export market in value terms also exhibited volatility during the observed period. The lowest exports were in 2017, with the highest in 2019, showing an 11.8-fold gap. In 2020, cross-border shipments of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts from Southern Asia were valued at 2 262 thousand US dollars, down by 62.8% compared to 2019. The peak value was in 2019 at 6 076 thousand US dollars. The largest increase happened in 2018, with a jump of 328.7%.
