Between 2018 and 2020, the copra market in Sri Lanka showed significant volatility. The market volume started at 90.2 thousand tons in 2018, rose to 103.1 thousand tons in 2019, then fell to 86.9 thousand tons in 2020. In value terms, it moved from $132.9 million to $136.6 million and down to $128.8 million over the same years. Industry context for 2018 pointed to a long-term decline in exportable surpluses as domestic consumption absorbed more of the coconut crop, with the Coconut Development Authority estimating that about 60% of production was used locally. Additionally, slow commercialization of by-products like coconut water, which was often discarded during processing, indicated underutilized potential in the value chain.

The market rebounded in 2021 to 95.2 thousand tons, while its value jumped sharply to $167.7 million, reflecting much higher unit prices that year. However, both volume and value retreated afterwards, dropping to 97.9 thousand tons and $141.0 million in 2022, and further to 89.0 thousand tons and $117.1 million by 2023. The period ended with market volume below its 2018 level, and value notably lower than the 2021 peak, showing no consistent upward or downward trend across the full six-year span.

Following two years of growth, Sri Lanka's copra production fell. In 2020, the country produced 88.0 K t of copra, marking a significant 17.8% drop from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 2.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.7%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 107.0 K t, which also saw the largest increase of 17.6%.
