Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2023, the domestic market for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in Nicaragua showed variable dynamics. After a decline to 73.9 thousand tons in 2019, market volume grew to 134.9 thousand tons by 2022 before contracting to 110.6 thousand tons in 2023.
The implementation of the mandatory technical standard NTON 11 039-13 for Good Agricultural Practices in 2018 established a foundation for safe groundnut production. The significant market expansion to 134.9 thousand tons in 2022 was driven by programs enhancing productivity, the adoption of new technologies and drought-resistant seeds, alongside the dominant role of COMASA, which accounts for approximately 75% of national production.
In 2023, despite a reported 5% increase in cultivated area for groundnuts, the market volume decreased. The National Plan for Production, Consumption and Trade 2023/2024 outlined supportive policies aimed at increasing agricultural output, including for groundnuts.
