From 2018 to 2019, the market for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in Iraq grew from 11 820 t to 12 524 t. Domestic production increased but continued to face chronic obstacles, including inconsistent agricultural policies, labor shortages, and inadequate management, which constrained faster expansion of local supply. Imports began to rise, contributing to the overall market growth.

Starting in 2020, the market accelerated its growth, reaching 21 542 t by 2023. This surge was primarily fueled by a sharp increase in imports, which rose from 8 104 t in 2020 to 15 281 t in 2023, while domestic production fluctuated but showed a moderate overall upward trend over these years.

In 2024, groundnut imports declined to 14 358 t. This shift coincided with the Ministry of Agriculture's ban on the import of five food products, aimed at protecting local producers. Concurrently, there was growing consumer interest in raw, unroasted groundnuts as a healthier option.

Iraq's production of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts declined after two years of growth. In 2020, the country produced 5 500 tonnes, marking a 5.5% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.3%. The peak was reached in 2019 at 5 823 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 7.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, India, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey were consistently the top sources for Iraq's imports of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts by volume. India accounted for 58.1% of imports, the UAE for 14.7%, and Turkey for 13.5%, together making up 86.3% of total import flows.

Between 2017 and 2020, India, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates remained the leading sources for Iraq's imports of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts by value. India held a 51.5% share, Turkey 17.2%, and the UAE 13.9%, collectively accounting for 82.7% of total import value.
