From 2018 to 2019, the market for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in India surged by 39%, reaching a volume of 9.1 million tonnes. This expansion occurred alongside active cultivation in states like Telangana, where groundnut modal prices ranged between Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 7,000 per quintal. The growth momentum continued into 2020, albeit at a slower pace, supported by the launch of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries' scheme with a Rs. 10,000 crore budget to upgrade micro food processing units, including those handling groundnuts, thereby enhancing production capabilities and farmer incomes.

Between 2021 and 2023, market growth stabilized, with the volume rising to 9.7 million tonnes by 2023. This period was marked by robust export demand to Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia and Vietnam, and the supply of diversified processed variants such as blanched and roasted salted peanuts. Domestic price fluctuations around the government's Minimum Support Price (MSP) provided a stable floor for producers, even as production instability persisted in some major growing states.

In 2024, groundnut exports from India jumped by 42% year-on-year in February, reflecting sustained international demand. Regulatory developments, including draft FSSAI amendments to food safety standards and packaging requirements, along with an Authority for Advance Rulings (AAR) decision on the classification of heated groundnuts, began shaping the market's operational framework.

India's production of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts grew for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 10 091 K t, marking a 3.7% increase from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 12%, averaging an annual growth rate of 3.9%. The lowest production level was in 2018 at 7 044 K t, which saw the largest decline of 21.8%. In contrast, 2019 recorded the highest increase at 38.1%.

In 2020, the output was valued at 11 142 M $ US, reflecting an 8.3% increase compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production value grew by 15.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.0%. The lowest value occurred in 2018 at 6 825 M $ US, which experienced the steepest decline of 29.1%. The largest increase was in 2019, with a jump of 50.8%.

India's exports of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports reached 679.6 K t, up 16.2% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 7.3%, averaging an annual rate of 2.4%. The lowest export volume was in 2018 at 471.2 K t, which saw the biggest drop of 25.6%. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a rise of 24.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines were the main buyers of India's not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in terms of volume. Indonesia accounted for 35.5% of exports, Vietnam for 17.0%, and the Philippines for 7.8%. Together, these three countries represented 60.2% of India's total exports in kind.

The value of India's not roasted and not cooked groundnuts exports rose for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 750.4 M $ US, showing a strong increase of 21.2% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, export value grew by 10.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 456.6 M $ US, which experienced the largest decline of 32.5%. The biggest increase was in 2019, with a gain of 35.6%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines were the key partners for India's not roasted and not cooked groundnuts exports in value terms. Indonesia made up 35.5% of the export value, Vietnam 17.3%, and the Philippines 7.9%. Collectively, these three countries accounted for 60.7% of India's total export flows.

India's imports of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts decreased in 2020, with cross-border shipments totaling 1.1 K t, down 44.0% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 31.2%, averaging an annual decline of 11.7%. The highest import volume was in 2019 at 2.0 K t, which also saw the largest increase of 65.5%.

During 2017 to 2020, Tanzania, the United Kingdom, and Russia were significant suppliers of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts to India in terms of volume. Tanzania contributed 31.7% of imports, the United Kingdom 5.7%, and Russia 4.7%. However, their combined share was only 42.1% of total imports in kind, with the remaining 57.9% spread across numerous other partners.

India's imports of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in value terms dropped sharply in 2020, amounting to 1.2 M $ US, a decrease of 30.6% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports declined by 34.8%, with an annualized rate of 13.3%. The largest increase was recorded in 2019, with a rise of 24.6%.

Tanzania accounted for 24.9% of imports in value terms, the United Kingdom for 6.0%, and Russia for 5.2%. Together, these three countries represented only 36.2% of total imports, while many smaller destinations made up the remaining 63.8%.
