The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 lowered demand in importing countries and led to factory closures in developing nations, yet the regional market volume rose to 9.5 million tons. Subsequent years saw a recovery in global demand, particularly from China where imports increased due to lower domestic output, supporting market value growth to $9.2 billion in 2023 despite some volume variability.

By 2023, Senegalese government policies, such as setting a minimum producer price and subsidizing seeds, bolstered local supply. Simultaneously, a sharp decline in Senegal's exports—stemming from lower harvests and restricted export windows—increased domestic availability, pushing volume to 10 million tons. In 2024, a further 46% drop in Senegal's harvest and rising worldwide demand for peanut oil continued to shape market conditions.
