Indian rapeseed production began a sustained upward trajectory from 2018, supported by government policies that included demands for 100% Minimum Support Price (MSP) procurement for oilseeds, providing farmers with guaranteed returns and incentive to plant. This was complemented by plans to launch the new 'Bharat Oil' brand of affordable edible oil, which signaled additional processing demand for domestic oilseeds like rapeseed.

Following a slight stabilization in 2020, output consistently climbed, surpassing 10 million tonnes in 2021 and approaching 12 million tonnes in 2022. The market's growth in 2022 was further reinforced by the global surge in crude oil prices, which increased the economic appeal of vegetable oils for various industrial and energy uses, thereby encouraging higher rapeseed cultivation.

Production continued to expand, reaching 12.6 million tonnes in 2023, as the combined effects of supportive procurement measures and strong demand fundamentals from the oil processing sector maintained momentum in the market.

India was the world's third-largest producer of rapeseed from 2017 to 2020.

India's rapeseed production grew for two consecutive years before declining. In 2020, production reached 9 124 K t, down 1.4% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production increased by 15.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.8%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 9 256 K t, which also saw the largest annual increase of 9.8%.

Exports rapeseed from India

Exports in kind, t

Export volumes showed significant volatility during this period. Exports fell to their lowest point in 2019 at 10.0 t, representing a 70.2% decline from the previous year and marking the largest drop in the period. From this trough in 2019 to the peak in 2017, exports changed by 11.1-fold. In 2020, India's rapeseed exports rebounded to 19.1 t, a substantial 90.5% increase year-over-year.

Export values exhibited considerable volatility throughout the observed period. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 258.2 K $ US, which represented a 135.1% increase from the previous year and marked the largest annual gain. Exports then declined sharply, with the largest drop occurring in 2019 at 93.8%. From this peak in 2018 to the trough in 2020, export values changed by 31-fold. In 2020, rapeseed exports from India totaled 8.4 K $ US, a 47.1% decrease from the previous year.
