The castor seeds market in India expanded rapidly from 1.2 million tonnes in 2018 to over 1.8 million tonnes in 2019. This surge was driven by the entry of new processors like Rajgor Castor Derivatives Ltd, which began sourcing from local farmers, and by growing global demand for sustainable castor oil in industries such as pharmaceuticals and bio-plastics.

Market volume declined to approximately 1.6 million tonnes in 2020 and 2021. Inadequate rainfall and persistent challenges in accessing quality seed material hindered crop yields, while the longer crop duration and lack of farm gate procurement further constrained production during this period.

Volume recovered to nearly 2.0 million tonnes in 2022 as multi-year high seed prices encouraged increased cultivation. The market stabilized at this level in 2023, supported by a 39% jump in castor oil exports and the ongoing adoption of high-yield hybrid seed varieties developed by Indian research institutions.

In 2020, India produced 1,647 thousand tonnes of castor seeds, representing a significant 10.6% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 5.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.7%. The lowest production level occurred in 2018 at 1,197 thousand tonnes, while the highest was recorded in 2019 at 1,842 thousand tonnes. The most substantial decline took place in 2018, falling by 23.7%, whereas the largest increase happened in 2019, rising by 53.9%.

Market performance showed notable fluctuations during this period. From 2018 to 2020, the difference between the peak and trough was 76-fold. In 2020, India exported 6,262 tonnes of castor seeds, a dramatic 40.3% increase compared to 2019.
