Production of eggs in Moldova declined from 74.9 thousand tons in 2018 to 63.0 thousand tons in 2021. This contraction coincided with regulatory changes aimed at aligning the sector with European Union standards. In 2018, the first local producer obtained EU certification, signaling the start of export-oriented modernization. The following year, new general product safety rules based on EU norms were introduced, affecting production and labeling conditions. By 2020, revised sanitary-veterinary norms and investments in hygiene monitoring equipment, supported by international financing, prepared the poultry sector for EU market access. The formal right to export category A eggs to the EU was granted in 2021, marking a key milestone but also involving adjustments that temporarily constrained output.

Production recovered to 66.8 thousand tons in 2022 and stabilized at 66.2 thousand tons in 2023. The rebound was driven by growing exports to the European Union, which doubled in volume, and by rising retail prices that reflected increased costs for feed and energy. Government investments of 6 billion lei into modernizing production facilities and traceability systems further supported the sector's export capacity. However, the emergence of H5N1 avian influenza outbreaks in 2023 led to strict biosecurity measures, which contained production growth. Meanwhile, the total market volume surged to 157.7 thousand tons in 2023, largely due to a sharp rise in imports, which likely compensated for domestic limitations and met sustained demand.
