However, in 2020 the market volume collapsed to 24 085 t, reflecting a sharp contraction in both domestic production and imports.

Recovery began in 2021 as pork imports surged to over 8 300 t, primarily from EU countries such as Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Spain, lifting the market size to 27 859 t. This trend continued into 2022, when the market reached 31 910 t, influenced by confirmed African swine fever outbreaks in neighboring Romania, which affected regional trade flows and consumer behavior. By 2023, the market eased slightly to 28 893 t.

Moldova's pork production has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 20 636 tons of pork, representing a sharp 68.2% drop compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 66.8%, with an average annual decline rate of 30.8%. The peak production was recorded in 2018 at 65 925 tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 6.0%.
