Production of non-coniferous wood fuel in Sub-Saharan Africa grew steadily from 636.1 million m³ in 2018 to 669.6 million m³ in 2023, reflecting a consistent annual increase in market volume. This expansion occurred as investment in renewable energy projects across the region rose from about $2.6 billion in 2021 to roughly $15 billion by 2023, signaling a shift toward cleaner alternatives that could influence long-term wood fuel demand.

By 2024, industrial firms in Kenya began switching from furnace oil, diesel, and gas to firewood and wood briquettes due to rising energy costs, directly boosting demand for wood fuel in industrial applications. The Woodtech Africa exhibition in Nairobi highlighted government and industry focus on unlocking the wood market's potential, while international energy investments, including from India, underscored the evolving regional energy landscape.

The increased industrial use of wood fuel raised concerns about forest cover sustainability in Kenya, where forest area was estimated at 8.83% of land. Concurrently, household adoption of cooking gas as an alternative to costly wood fuel reflected changing consumer behavior, adding complexity to market dynamics amid broader energy transitions.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, non-coniferous wood fuel production has increased for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 648.2 million cubic meters of this fuel, marking a 1.0% rise compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production grew by 3%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.0%.
