The growth in 2022 was bolstered by a 29% increase in European Union production of non-coniferous sawnwood, expanding supply for the Dutch market. The decline in 2021 occurred amid a broader European trend where consumer preferences increasingly favored certified wood with transparent origin, potentially affecting import patterns.

In subsequent years, trade flows adjusted as European production and imports fell significantly in 2024, contributing to a drop in Dutch import volume that year. Throughout the period, ISPM 15 regulations for wood packaging continued to shape international trade, requiring heat treatment and marking for exports and imports involving the Netherlands. After a two-year decline, foreign non-coniferous sawnwood supplies from the Netherlands increased. In 2021, exports amounted to 130.7 million US dollars, showing a sharp year-over-year increase of 27.6%. Between 2018 and 2021, exports rose by 23.8%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 7.4%. The minimum value was recorded in 2020 at 102.4 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 2.0%.
