By 2022, the market expanded significantly to 50 216 t. This growth was primarily driven by the European Commission's proposal for the stringent Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which set stricter recyclability and sustainability requirements, and by sustained consumer preference in the Netherlands for eco-friendly, recyclable packaging. The market volume continued its upward trend, reaching 51 261 t in 2023.

Over the period from 2018 to 2020, production rose by 199.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 44.1%.

In 2018, exports reached their lowest point, while 2019 saw the peak at 20 198 tonnes, resulting in a 1.9-fold variation between these two years. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a jump of 93.7%, whereas the largest decline was recorded in 2020, dropping by 19.9%. In 2021, the Netherlands exported 13 162 tonnes, representing a sharp fall of 18.7% compared to the previous year.

From 2018 to 2021, Germany, Belgium, and France remained the top buyers of wooden cases, boxes, crates, drums, and similar packings and cable-drums from the Netherlands in terms of volume. Germany accounted for 46.1% of exports in kind, Belgium for 24.4%, and France for 7.2%. Together, these three countries made up 77.7% of total exports in kind.
